Insulation

Insulation

There are a number of different types of insulation out there and it can become confusing as to which insulation is best for your home. This is why we have broken down each of the different types of insulation that are out there for you. We have also put together a little information on what you should be looking for in your insulation as well as where you are able to install that particular type of insulation.

The first type of insulation that we are going to look at is the blanket batts and rolls. This type of insulation is made from fiberglass, minerals, plastic fibers, and natural fibers. This is the pink stuff that many do-it yourselfers are familiar with. You generally see this type of insulation installed in unfinished walls, floors, and ceilings. This type of insulation has a lower R-value than some of the other insulation that is out there.  This is also one of the least expensive options when it comes to insulation. This is not the best of the insulation that is out there though.

The next type of insulation that we are going to look at is concrete block insulation. This type of insulation is generally put on the outside walls of your home during the construction phase of your home. The down side to this type of insulation is that it is better used during the construction of your home. When this type of insulation starts to degrade over time it is hard to replace. The amount of thickness that you have of concrete block insulation is directly related to the thickness that you get or that is put into place.

The next insulation type that you should be aware of is foam board insulation. This type of insulation is made from polystyrene, polyurethane, and polyisocyanurate. You can install this insulation to unfinished walls, roofs that are unvented and low-sloped, and you are able to put this type of insulation in the floors and ceilings. This particular type of insulation has a high insulation value and it requires little thickness to be able to get this type of value. The problem that some people have is that once again to be able to get to where it is to be placed and rip down walls to reinstall.

Blown-in insulation is another type of insulation that is out there. This type of insulation is basically a loose-filled material that is actually blown into your walls. There is a machine that is used for this type of insulation and that machine has a hose that the insulation goes through to get into your walls. Over time you might see this type of insulation start to settle toward the bottom of your walls (you will not actually see it but you might notice that your energy bill continues to go up every year). This will reduce its effectiveness and thus you will need to have it redone.

The last type of insulation that we are going to look at is foam insulation. This particular type of insulation does have one of the highest R-values out there at this time. You will also want to keep in mind that this type of insulation installation will require a professional insulation contractor to install it. There are some foam insulation out there that are water proof, fire resistance, and can provide a high R-value. You will want to make sure that you have the proper type of foam insulation when you choose to go this route. You will also want to see if you are able to find an insulation that is able to reduce the amount of noise that you hear.

The R-value will vary depending on where you are located. Different areas require different R-values. There are some areas that should stay the same no matter where you are located. This would be the roof and floors of your home. For example no matter where you live the R-value of insulation in your roof should be no less than 49. The R-value for the floor of your home should have an R-value no less than 25. The insulation in your walls is where it can vary depending on where you live. For the most part those that live in the northern states such as Maine you will want to have an R-value in your walls of at least 28. Those that live in the mid-west might be able to get away with an R-value of 22 in their walls. For the most part everyone else should be able to get away with using an R-value of 18. While the minimums are set you should always try to get an insulation that is as high as possible.

For those out there that might consider installing their own insulation there is a limited amount of options that you have. You will be restricted as to the type of insulation that you are able to get on your own. You will also need to determine how much insulation that you are going to need for your project. You will need to determine the best placement for insulation. Most people find that it is less expensive to have an insulation specialist come in and do their insulation then to do it themselves. For those that do not have the experience that is needed for some insulation cases. You will also need to understand that if you put in the insulation improperly there could be problems later down the road. You will want to make sure that you take the time to figure out how to calculate how much insulation you are going to need for your insulation project.

Maine InsulationYou will want to make sure that if you do decide to have a professional insulation installer come in that you compare price to the same R-value and not just a blanket insulation job. You will find that insulation installers that work with lower quality insulation will have lower rates than those insulation installers that work with higher quality insulation. For example, if the insulation installer that you are looking at only deals with batt insulation then they would be less expensive than those insulation installers that deal with foam insulation. You will want to make sure that when you are shopping around for the right insulation that you are taking the time to compare the same R-value when you are pricing out your insulation project. You will also want to consider the amount of information that you are going to need to do the job properly on your own.

There are a number of items that you need to consider when it comes to installing insulation. You will need to determine the type of insulation materials that you are going to use. You will also need to determine if you are going to try a do it yourself type insulation or if you are going to hire an insulation contractor. You will need to determine when you want to have the insulation installed. There are some people that vacation during the summer and would want to have their insulation done in the winter. There are some out there that might not be home often in the winter so they opt to have their insulation done in the summer time. You will want to keep in mind that some areas of your home might be very hot in the winter time. This is not to say that it is a bad idea to have your insulation done in the summer simply pointing out if you are attempting to install the insulation yourself in the summer time you might want to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water so that you do not become dehydrated.

When you are looking at insulation there are a few things that you should make sure that you understand. The first item that you will want to look at is the R-value. The R-value is the measure of unit that puts a value on the amount of thermal resistance. What this means is the higher the R-value the better the material is able to keep your house cool in summer and your house warm in the winter without over exerting your energy source. You will also want to make sure that you are able to find insulation that will not start to lose effectiveness within a year or two.

You will also want to make sure that you look for an insulation contractor that knows what they are doing and has the experience to be able to guide you in your insulation installation decision. Call:
